Want a rough idea of size before we visit? Here is how roller shutter measurements are typically taken. Note: this guide is for general reference only – we always confirm exact measurements ourselves with a free on-site visit before any order is placed, so there is no risk in getting it slightly wrong here.
What you will need
- A steel tape measure (fabric tape can stretch and throw off the numbers)
- Someone to help hold the tape for larger windows
- Pen and paper, or your phone, to record each measurement in millimetres
Measuring the width
- Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening.
- Record the smallest of the three measurements – window openings are rarely perfectly square, and shutters are sized to fit the tightest point.
- Measure in millimetres for accuracy.
Measuring the height
- Measure the height on the left side, centre and right side of the opening.
- Again, record the smallest measurement.
- If there is an existing pelmet, awning or pipe in the way, note it down – it may affect where the shutter box sits.
Other things worth noting
- Recess depth – how far back the window sits from the outer wall, if you want an inside-mounted shutter.
- Obstructions – security screens, fly screens, awnings, or anything else around the opening.
- Power access – if you are considering a motorised shutter, note the nearest power point.
